An antiseptic is a substance that prevents the growth and reproduction of various micro-organisms (such as bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and viruses) on the external surfaces of the body. Some are true germicides, capable of destroying the bacteria, whilst others merely prevent or inhibit their growth. The main purpose served by antiseptics is to reduce the possibility of sepsis, infection, or putrefaction by germs.

Cuts from shaving can bleed for about fifteen minutes. Usual ways to stop bleeding include putting alcohol on a cotton swab and pressing it onto the cut until the bleeding stops. Thus in such cases it is vey common to use alcohol based aftershave as it contains an antiseptic agent to prevent infection from cuts. Alcohol based aftershave will not only provide a healing effect to your skin after shaving (due to cuts) but it will also close down those facial pores which is what causes the characteristic stinging. This sting actually provides a bracing effect to men and is often welcomed by them.
